In June, 2013, Harry Louis Steven VanPelt was allegedly engaging in a methamphetamine deal with an undercover Missoula County Sheriff’s Office deputy. Following the deal, two deputies in a marked car and in marked uniforms drove into the Magic Diamond Casino parking lot to attempt to arrest and apprehend VanPelt. According to the report filed in the case, a deputy was attempting to get VanPelt into custody when VanPelt made a quick move downward into the door area of his pickup truck. The deputy considered the quick move – a move for a weapon, and the deputy discharged two rounds into the truck door, with VanPelt behind it. VanPelt was struck by bullets and was taken to an area hospital. A search of the truck was unable to find any weapon inside of it.
