On Wednesday, a Whitefish resident, Alexander Mandarino, 26 was shot and killed by an Idaho State Trooper near the Montana/Idaho state line. Authorities report that a Shoshone County, Idaho deputy discovered Mandarino parked off I-90 and made contact with him to give him any assistance needed. The deputy discovered Mandarino had a gun, and he and the deputy entered into a physical struggle to control that weapon. In the mean time, an Idaho State Trooper had arrived to assist the deputy prior to the struggle. Watching the deputy struggle with Mandarino over the weapon, the Trooper drew his weapon and fatally shot Mandarino. Both law enforcement officers have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of the incident.
